Mexico City. A group of citizens demonstrated in a sit-in this Sunday in front of the Angel of Independence to demand “an end to the genocide” that Israel is committing against the Palestinian people.
Although they launched the call for, like every Sunday, Mexican citizens to come to this point to express their rejection of the Israeli attacks on the Palestinian territory, as well as now on Lebanon and Iran, they regretted the lack of response, since only five people responded to the call.
Benjamín Ortiz, one of the conveners, celebrated that President Claudia Sheinbaum had demanded in her conference on Friday the recognition of the Palestinian State and censured the Israeli attacks. However, he considered that the Mexican government should state that these attacks represent genocide.
He stressed that the presidents of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, “called things by their name, talking about genocide. It was good that President Sheinbaum called for the recognition of Palestine and an end to the ‘war’, but this is not a war, it is wholesale slaughter.”
After a year of Israel’s invasion of Gaza, Gilberto García, another of the protesters, considered it “worrying” that there is no response to this type of calls from citizens in Mexico City.
“What would we think if those murdered were Mexicans? “What would we think if the world stayed silent?” he asked.
