“Zionism is a genocide”, chanted the demonstrators in particular
A pro-Palestinian demonstration which took place on Saturday in New York degenerated into violent clashes with the police. The clashes broke out when the 5,000 protesters refused to evacuate the central street where they were gathered, blocking the artery for hours. Among the slogans heard, “Zionism is genocide”, “We call for the complete liberation of all of Palestine, every inch – from the river to the sea” or “By spirit and blood we will take back Palestine”. In addition to the Palestinian flags, a banner was also seen showing the silhouette of a man throwing an Israeli flag into the trash, under the caption: “Please keep the world clean.” All protesters called on President Biden to withdraw support for Israel in its war against Hamas.
The demonstration descended into chaos after dark, when participants lit fires in the middle of the roads and threw eggs at police. 24 rioters were arrested.
