Pro-Palestinian Demonstration in Berlin Leads to Clashes and Arrests

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered at the Neptune Fountain in front of the Red City Hall in Berlin on Saturday afternoon. Under the motto “Solidarity with Palestine”, they marched along Spandauer Straße, Anna-Louisa-Karsch-Straße, Rosenthaler Straße, Torstraße and Friedrichstraße to Unter den Linden street, where there were scuffles and arrests at the final rally in the evening.

The demonstration set off from Alexanderplatz shortly after 3 p.m. According to the police, around 2,500 participants took part. The organizer told the Berliner Zeitung that there were 5,000. These estimates are usually significantly higher than those of the authorities. 1,500 people were registered. Several pro-Palestinian groups had called for the protest.

Counter-demonstrators also gathered at Alexanderplatz in the afternoon. While the slogan “Freedom for Palestine” was shouted at the Palestine demonstration, people on the opposite side of the street countered “Free Gaza from Hamas”. According to police, the number of counter-demonstrators was between 160 and 200.

The pro-Palestine rally was accompanied by around 470 police officers. In the evening there were clashes between demonstrators and police on Unter den Linden. Emergency services pushed their way through a crowd of people and several arrests were made, our reporter reports. The demonstration was supposed to last until 8 p.m., but ended before then.
