The international organization Pro Mujer launched this week in the United States an internet platform in Spanish to support Latin American immigrant women with entrepreneurial education.
Carmen Correa, its executive director, said this Tuesday that equal pay is a persistent problem around the world and that it is getting worse in the United States.
“In the United States this situation worsens when we take into account racial or ethnic conditions: for every dollar that a white man earns, a Latina woman earns only 57 cents on the dollar,” lamented the Uruguayan executive.
The initiative, which was presented Monday at a Clinton Foundation event in New York, seeks to turn Latinas in the United States into entrepreneurs and counteract wage inequality.
“Women receive less pay for the same work and that is an indisputable reality,” said Correa, who in the past worked for the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
He added that the new platform, called Undertake Pro Womanfree and in Spanish, will benefit “thousands” of women in the United States.
According to Pro Mujer, The initiative has served around 42,000 women entrepreneurs in more than 23 countries in Latin America since its launch in 2021.
Pro Mujer, an entity of Bolivian origin, promotes the financial inclusion of women and seeks to provide them with training opportunities and facilitate their access to health services.
Latin Americans represent 19% of the US population and exert considerable economic, political and cultural influence. However, continue to face significant challenges, including wage disparity, high unemployment, and low-paying jobs.
With the support of its partners, Pro Mujer hopes that the US arm of the platform will reach women and their families.
“Women are catalysts of development, drivers of local economies and creators of jobs,” said Correa during the launch in New York at the Clinton Global Initiative 2023 forum. “The skills taught through Emprende Pro Mujer empower women. women, promote economic independence and facilitate personal and professional growth.”
He specified that by teaching essential knowledge such as financial and technological literacystructural barriers that limit women’s ability to reach their full potential are also broken down.
En EE.UU. 80% of Latina women have plans to improve their quality of life, and Latina entrepreneurs create businesses at a rate six times faster than other groups in the United States, Pro Mujer noted.
The program has a specific module for migrant womendevelops leadership, management, financial, digital and commercial skills, in addition to increasing self-esteem.
Pro Mujer also committed to expanding sexual and reproductive health services to reach 70,000 women and their families in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.
A community health worker program will provide comprehensive resources to women in the region.
Only 54% currently have access to modern contraceptives in the aforementioned region, according to Pro Mujer.
