MONITORING MEP Balázs Hidvéghi from Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party warned that in the European Union, “pro-migration forces are trying to push through a new package of measures in the field of migration.” This new package, which according to Hidvéghi is to be enforced by force, should once again bring a system of quotas for the redistribution of illegal refugees.
Balázs Hidvéghi claims that some representatives of Brussels are using unfair practices to push through a new immigration package that should once again introduce a quota system. “Pro-migration forces are attempting a coup to push through a system that would be a return to the quota system that failed years ago and perpetuates illegal migration,” said the Hungarian MEP according to dailynewshungary.com.
Hidvéghi illustrates this, for example, by the fact that ministers and state secretaries allegedly received the text of the new migration measures at Thursday’s meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg just half an hour before the vote. “Hungary and Poland voted against the measures, while a number of other, particularly Central European member states, abstained,” Hidvéghi said.
According to Hidvéghi, the new directives should financially penalize member states refusing migration quotas. “While Hungary has spent more than 1.5 billion euros to protect its borders and the borders of the EU and is waiting in vain for Brussels to share the costs, efforts are underway to introduce a system that would financially penalize member states that reject illegal migration,” said Hidvéghi.
He added that the political debate on migration in Hungary is the broadest and most extensive of all EU member states, and Hungarians in the referendum said a clear no to resettling migrants within the framework of quotas. “The European Council has clearly conditioned its position on migration issues with the consent of all members, not with a simple majority, as was the case on Thursday. The recent development therefore contradicts the council’s earlier position. With this in mind, as well as Hungary’s firm position on this matter, the implementation of the proposal must be prevented,” appealed Hidvéghi.
