More than 20 people were arrested in clashes between pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protesters that occurred during the night of Thursday in New York, according to local media today.
The altercations took place in and around Times Square hours after the Israeli government and the Islamist movement Hamas announce a ceasefire to end eleven days of escalating warfare that left 232 dead in Gaza and another 12 in Israel.
Groups of pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protesters met in downtown Manhattan and, despite extensive police action, ended up starring in numerous scenes of violence.
In images captured by various means, people from both sides can be seen exchanging blows and throwing objects at each other, while police charges tried to contain the clashes.
In addition, according to the authorities, fireworks were detonated in the vicinity of that area, causing burns to at least one person.
The hate crimes unit of the New York Police Department (NYPD) for its part announced who is investigating a group attack against a Jewish man in Times Square and has requested through social networks citizen collaboration to identify those responsible.
During the escalation of violence in the Middle East, New York has been the scene of numerous protests, mainly in support of the Palestinian population, which have also been called in other US cities such as Washington DC, Los Angeles (California) and Minneapolis (Minnesota).
