Prix ​​Galien Research Award for Frances de Man

This year’s Prix Galien Research Award has been awarded to Dr Frances de Man. The jury agrees with the conclusion of the people who nominated her: “Frances de Man is a versatile and talented scientist who has been acting at the highest level for years. She is also an important role model for the next generation of female researchers in particular.”

De Man works in the lung disease department of Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, where she obtained her doctorate in 2010. Before that, she had completed a double master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences. She has since supervised a research group of 14 people and 10 completed PhD trajectories and has been involved in more than 100 publications in renowned international journals. In the meantime, she also became an epidemiologist.

Her research focuses mainly on the causes of right heart failure, a dreaded and untreatable complication of pulmonary hypertension. By unraveling these causes, it is hoped that new treatment strategies can be developed. In addition, De Man is committed to reducing animal testing and plays a prominent role in achieving equal opportunities for female researchers. In addition to the gold Prix Galien medal, De Man will receive a cash prize of 5000 euros.
