Private School Teachers Syndicate Announces Strike in Lebanon for Fair Compensation

The Private School Teachers Syndicate issued a statement after the Executive Council meeting, headed by Captain Neama Mahfoud and in the presence of the branch councils, which stated the following:

1- Despite the positivity with which we faced the compensation legal response to the House of Representatives with a clear constitutional violation, and despite our response to the efforts of the Minister of Education in the caretaker government, Judge Abbas Al-Halabi, and our participation in the meeting that was held in his office on Tuesday, and coming to an agreement with the Union of Private Educational Institutions, and in the presence The Parent Committees and the Director of the Compensation Fund, Mr. George Saqr, stipulated that an amount of one million liras per year (i.e. 10 dollars) be paid for each student in private schools, and after receiving the wording of the agreement announced by the Minister of Education in audio and video, and despite all the positive atmosphere and hope that the retired professors had. By obtaining salaries that do not provide them with a minimum standard of decent living, but that do justice to them equally with their colleagues in formal education, we were surprised today, shortly before the scheduled meeting, by the Ministry of Education informing them of the Federation of Educational Institutions’ apology for attending without any justification at a minimum, out of respect for their position and commitment before the Minister. The educational family and public opinion.

2- In view of the above, the Executive Council of the Private School Teachers Syndicate announces a strike starting on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 in all private schools in Lebanon if the institutions do not retract their decision before this date and to make room for the initiatives undertaken by the Minister of Education, Judge Abbas. Al-Halabi thanked you, in objection to the path these institutions are taking in continuing to deprive more than 4,000 retired professors of a living, and leaving them to their fate of receiving two million and three million liras per month, as a retirement salary, after 40 years of dedication to the service of education. What happened confirms that educational institutions do not want any solution to the issue of retired professors, and do not care at all about their livelihood, despite all claims to the contrary. For our part, we gave this issue sufficient time to be resolved, until it exceeded four years, and no one moved to address it. On the contrary, today we see before us a failure to give retired professors the minimum requirements for resilience, whether through violating the constitution by rejecting the two laws, or By disavowing the agreement that took place at the Ministry of Education.

3- The Executive Council of the Teachers Syndicate keeps its meetings open to keep abreast of developments and take appropriate positions regarding them. We call on our female colleagues and fellow teachers to follow what is issued by the union, and to join hands and show solidarity in defense of their right and the right of retirees to a decent living.
