Privacy Risks in the Automotive Industry: Study Finds Serious Flaws in Car Security

“Cars are the worst product category we’ve ever researched,” reads the introduction news about a study by the Mozilla company that dealt with the security of user data. The firm reviewed 25 brands and all were given a symbolic warning sticker saying “privacy not included”.

All brands collect too much personal data about people – more than is necessary to provide connectivity services. They also use this data for other things than to provide those services. They can collect data about the way you work with the car, what Internet-connected services you use in it, and through a smartphone app, also about a specific phone.

Data on how fast a person drives, where and where they drive or what music they listen to are also a matter of course. From this they are able to derive the interests, abilities or intelligence of the given person.

Most car companies can also share or sell the data according to the conditions that a person agrees to when starting to use services connected to the Internet. 56% of brands can also provide them to the police upon request, without the need for a court order.

In addition, of the examined brands, only Renault and Dacia provide drivers with the option to delete data. Almost all brands, except for Renault, Dacia, which scored the best in the rating, and Tesla, which, on the contrary, is the worst, are members of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which should ensure a higher level of privacy and transparency, but according to Mozilla, they do not fulfill the obligations arising from membership.
