Prisons implement pardons

(VOVWORLD) – The pardon is a humanitarian act of the policy of the party and the state for the prisoners who show remorse. In order to implement the President’s decision to pardon, the prisons of the Ministry of Public Security carried out the pardon. Transparency and justice must be guaranteed.

Immediately after the decision to pardon the President and the Pardon Board’s order were announced, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Police Department selected the prisoners who meet the criteria. In addition, the prison has provided pardon information so that inmates can self-assess whether they can meet the criteria for a pardon. The prison staff also advised the prisoners on their future career choices so that they could integrate sustainably into society. Lieutenant Colonel Pham Hung Manh of the Khanh Hoa Provincial Police Department says this.

“We teach the prisoners who will soon be pardoned the law so that they can stop breaking the law and integrate better into society. This will help them understand the party and state’s policies and laws regarding pardons. We help them find their careers and even take out loans.”

This year, 3 out of 20 inmates in the Khanh Hoa Provincial Police Department Prison meet the conditions for a pardon. Vo Thi Phuong Uyen from the coastal city of Nha Trang is one of them:

“I myself am very pleased and happy that my name is on the president and government’s pardon list for 2024. In prison we have the opportunity to learn, recognize our mistakes and strive to repair the harm we have caused.”

More than 100 of a total of 400 inmates at the Police Department’s Vinh Quang Prison meet pardon conditions. Nguyen Van Luong was sentenced to eight years in prison and has been in Vinh Quang Prison for five years. He was always rated well in the rehabilitation process and is therefore pardoned.

“I deeply regret my actions. I hope to be released soon to return to my family and be a useful citizen to society.”

The deputy head of the prison administration department, Major General Tran Van Thien, explains the preparation for pardons across the country:

“We investigate, review and compile a list of people who meet the requirements for a pardon. The records of these people are processed properly and strictly in accordance with the regulations and in a democratic, fair, transparent and public manner.”

Since 2009, the President of Vietnam has granted pardons to more than 92,000 prisoners who have rehabilitated, worked and studied well, so that they can return to their families and communities and become useful citizens of society. The pardon has given many people the chance to turn their lives around. Many of them have honest lives after returning to the community. The relapse rate is very low. This confirms the importance of a humanitarian policy in Vietnam.
