A prisoner from the Vale do Sousa Prison, in Paços de Ferreira, is infected with covid-19. Prison guards are being called in to take the test at Vila Real Hospital.
The inmate had not been released from prison since May and, last Friday, went to the Penafiel Hospital to make a pre-surgery appointment.
“Following the protocol, the prisoner was tested at covid-19 and returned to the prison, where he was placed in a wing with another hundred prisoners. It was learned, this Monday, that he is infected and the two guards who they accompanied the hospital to the service. Prison Guard personnel are very afraid, as it is unknown how the contagion occurred, “Jorge J Alves, president of the National Union of the Prison Guard Corps, told JN.
At this moment, Paços de Ferreira is the deputy general director of INEM’s chains and elements. All off duty guards are being called to be tested, this Monday, at Vila Real Hospital.
“We do not know the reasons why the guards have to go to Vila Real. However, the wing where the inmate is, who is asymptomatic, was isolated and he was placed in confinement,” said Jorge Alves.
“It is urgent to know how the infection happened, because the prisoner had left in May for a medical consultation and never returned abroad. And there were tests at the end of that month that were negative. It is urgent to know who else is infected in the establishment “, said the union leader.
