Prison department denies customs permission to dream

Thiruvananthapuram: The jail department has said that visitors do not need customs permission to meet Swapna Suresh, who is lodged in jail in a gold smuggling case. On October 14, Kofoposa was charged and transferred to the Attakkulangara Women’s Prison. They were allowed to visit visitors once a week. Sarith, who is lodged in Poojappura Central Jail, was also allowed visitors. It was mandatory to have a representative of the prison department and a representative of customs with the visitors.

The customs officer also accompanied the remanded investigative agency representative. But jail DGP Rishiraj Singh issued a circular yesterday showing that this was a wrong practice. It has been sent to the Superintendent of Attakulangara Women’s Jail and the Superintendent of Poojappura Central Jail. In 1974, the Center introduced the Kofoposa Act. The following year, Kerala passed a related law. Accordingly, no special permission is required to visit the accused. Permission may be granted in accordance with prison rules.

If there is such a law for customs, it is the position of the prison department that they should come forward with it. The prison department had sent back the customs officer who had accompanied the dreamer’s husband, brother and daughter the previous day. He was a regular visitor. Customs said the prison department was trying to sabotage the case. Under the new move, anyone can come and see the dream. Lots of people might come. This will affect the case. Indications are that Customs is also trying to approach the court on the matter.
