In the glittering world of the Norwegian royal family, where protocol and decency dictate the rules, a dark shadow has begun to loom. Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, suddenly finds himself at the centre of a scandal that has caused even the most hardened royals to pause.
On Sunday (4 August), Marius was temporarily arrested after allegedly being violent towards a woman. The Norwegian magazine “Se og Hør” was the first to report on the alleged act of violence.

Police confirmed that the alleged victim, with whom Marius was allegedly in a relationship, was diagnosed with a concussion after an examination in hospital. Crown Prince Haakon, Marius’ stepfather, described the situation as a “serious matter”. Amidst the rumors and speculation, Nora Haukland, Marius’ ex-girlfriend, has also spoken out.

In an emotional Snapchat video on August 7, she revealed that she had been through a rollercoaster of emotions in the last few hours. Haukland and Høiby were a couple for almost a year before their separation in July 2023 made headlines. At the time, she wrote on Instagram: “It’s always hard to let go of love, but sometimes it’s right.” Her words now seem prophetic, given the dramatic developments.
Marius’ lawyer, Øyvind Bratlien, has advised that his client should not comment for the time being, while the palace is privately citing the lawyer’s advice and not revealing any further details about the arrest.
