On Wednesday 22 September, Princess Märtha Louise turns 50 years old. At the time of writing, it is not known how she will celebrate, but the day is guaranteed to be marked. The family is general good at celebrating both big and small.
On the occasion of the princess’ birthday, we allow ourselves an ever so small look back at her 30th birthday, which was celebrated with a bang in Bergen 20 years ago.
On that occasion, she also sewed a very special dress, which to this day fascinates.
Märtha loves clothes with hidden symbols and secret messages, and it was precisely this passion that she lived out to the fullest at the 30th anniversary party.
In collaboration with designer Wenche Lyche, she created a creation that summed up her life so far with images and symbols.
Among other things, there were pictures of her favorite horse, the car Volkswagen Beetle, Kvitebjørn kong Valemon and dice roll six.

Many thought the latter referred to Ari Behn’s critically acclaimed book “Sad as hell”, which he himself tattooed on his arm. But she revealed herself that it was for the praise she received for the outfit at her brother’s wedding earlier that year.
Tribute to Ari
The tribute to Ari on the 30-year-old dress, on the other hand, was the billiard ball on the hip, which is taken from the front of his book. The couple were dating at the time. Only later that year did the news come that they had become engaged.
Märtha’s spectacular dress was also embroidered with a pig. Many people may have thought it was about her growing up on a farm, but it was more alternative than that. The pig is the princess’ zodiac sign in the Chinese horoscope.

– I always ask my wedding dress customers about their zodiac signs. I like to use stones that belong to the character, the designer has said VG former.

In addition, it was also sewn on, among other things, the Märtha lily, stars, a butterfly on the stomach, a truck and a tomato.
– Just when I thought about raising my hand in class, I was red, so everyone called me the tomato. I had “Tommaten” with two m’s on the russelua, the princess told me why she chose a tomato according to VG.
The princess made an impression with the 30-year-old dress, but it was neither the first nor the last time she has worn clothes with symbols and secret messages.
The day before she married herself, she wore a dress – also from Wenche Lyche – with a self-written English text:
“When they met, every moment became an eternity, and every eternal moment embraced their love.”
And who does not remember the much debated yellow and red dress from the Crown Prince’s wedding in Spain, which was a tribute to the bride and groom in the form of the country’s colors.

– That clothes are language is no secret, and Märtha Louise has taken it several times, well – literally. She may not be a fashion icon, but she is a living example of how clothes and fashion can be fun. The dress she wore when she turned 30 embodied it, designed by the Norwegian clothing designer Wenche Lyche known for her partly untraditional design with emphasis on the personal and surprising, says Ida Elise Eide Einarsdóttir, fashion and beauty manager at KK, to Se og Hør.
– If you see fashion as something more than just clothes, it is undoubtedly a symbol bearer, and clothes with personal messages, though often political, have become fashionable. Just look at this week’s Met Gala and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ‘dress with the caption “Tax the rich” or Dior with chief designer Maria Grazia Chiuri at the helm and her “feminine revolution” that started with the T-shirt with the print “We should all be a feminist “, she continues.

Today, the princess actually runs clothes herself. In 2020 the foundationshe clothes brand Hèst, together with Monica Sundt Utne and Anne-Kari Bøhaugen. The knitting collections are sold at Ferner Jacobsen, among others, and now the trio will publish knitting book.
