Princess Marie of Liechtenstein has died at the age of 81. She was the wife of Prince Hans Adam II, the head of state of the microstate.
Marie was admitted to a Swiss hospital on Wednesday after suffering a stroke. She died there yesterday. According to the Liechtenstein court, she died peacefully and surrounded by her family.
Marie, born in Prague, married Hans Adam in 1967, who was then still Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein. They had four children. Marie was known for being socially engaged and an art lover. She was also chairman of the Red Cross in Liechtenstein for thirty years.
Liechtenstein, which lies between Switzerland and Austria, is a parliamentary democracy, led by the monarch. Hans Adam handed over his powers to his eldest son Alois in 2004, but he remained in office. Only when he dies, the title of monarch is transferred.
