Princess Leonor of Bourbon is ready for war. Or rather to the eventuality of a conflict and in each case to his future role as Commander-in-Chief of the Spanish troops. When it will be her turn to take up her baton from her father, King Felipe VI.
Leonor of Bourbon, 17 years old, heir to the throne of Spain, has in fact entered the military academy of Zaragoza – where the bust of Generalissimo Franco still dominates, which he wanted to found precisely that academy.
And there she will remain for three intense years, time to prove herself with 600 other recruits, a fifth women, with military discipline: no loose hair, no earrings, 12 mates and strict training on how to handle, and aim with a weapon from fire.
Not a walk, and not a short period, in short, but real training in the different corps that make up the Spanish army. Accompanying Infanta Leonor to her Academy was her younger sister Sofia, and her mother Queen Letizia who embraced her daughter in an embrace full of affection and apprehension.
With dad Felipe in his military uniform conquered with the same training as his daughter Leonor now. The same uniform that his grandfather, now king emeritus, Juan Carlos, also wore when he ended up under the wing of General Franco who immediately felt an instinctive sympathy for that boy without a kingdom, son of the Count of Barcelona. Enough to then give him the scepter of power on his death.
A caress and a hug, this is how happy mother of Spain greeted her daughter and future queen of Spain, Leonor, who entered the military academy yesterday for a long and hard training that will keep her away from home for three years. Then she will continue with the university as already father Felipe VI who greeted her with his uniform of Commander in Chief, the same role that will fall to Leonor when she will be sovereign. Same strict training – wake up at dawn, exhausting rhythms – for three years after Leonor attended the college of the heirs to the throne as the Atlantic college of Wales has been nicknamed.
Strict training, and for a long time (3 years) which not surprisingly for a couple of years have caused a lot of debate in the Iberian peninsula about the need to force a young girl to such a grueling military training process. Or if, on the other hand, the female heir of the king could not be subsidized, a traditional route, for faster and more reduced training. The path of tradition has prevailed.
A debate that is being re-proposed across the Channel where for the young George, future heir to the throne of King Charles III, his parents, the princes of Wales William and Kate, are also considering the option of sparing him the classic training in the academy from indiscretions fell to his father William.
