An unverified Instagram account claiming to belong to Princess Latifa, the daughter of the billionaire ruler of Dubai who has not been publicly seen or heard from in over a year, has posted a photo and statement repeating claims that she is “free and living an independent life”. The post has garnered attention, prompting Sky News to reach out to the account and the UAE Embassy for verification. Women associated with Princess Latifa are among those interacting with the profile. Although the profile claims the photo was taken a few months ago, there is no way to verify this due to Instagram’s data removal policies. The last known photo of Princess Latifa was with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in February 2022, although the image had actually been taken the previous November. In 2021, secret video messages revealed that Princess Latifa claimed her father was holding her hostage, causing concern among world leaders. Allegations regarding the treatment of both Princess Latifa and her sister Shamsa were heard in a High Court battle in London in 2020 between their father and his former wife, Princess Haya.
