After the end of his career, tennis ace Roger Federer only comes to Wimbledon as a visitor – but with royal company. In the Royal Box he has apparently found an entertaining seat neighbor in Princess Kate.
The tennis tournament in Wimbledon can confidently be described as the living room of former Swiss top player Roger Federer. The 41-year-old has won there a total of eight times and is still the sole record holder. After Federer ended his extraordinary tennis career in September 2022, he paid a visit to this year’s Wimbledon tournament together with Prince William’s wife Princess Kate. Federer has now raved about his time in the Royal Box.
“It was so much fun sitting next to Princess Kate. I know her pretty well,” he told the New York Times in an interview. With his wife Mirka and the wife of the British heir to the throne, the tennis ace took a seat in the Royal Box on July 4th to watch the most important games of the day. However, according to the Swiss, Kate and he should have been careful not to talk “too much”. “You can talk and then it’s very quiet and then you have to applaud,” he told the Times.
Princess Kate, who has been patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 2016, described Federer as an “enthusiastic tennis fan”. The 41-year-old regularly visits the box of honor provided for her and the royal family and also presented the trophies to the finalists on the women’s final day.
The day after, Princess Kate appeared with her two oldest children, ten-year-old Prince George and eight-year-old Princess Charlotte, for the men’s final, with Kate’s daughter in particular cheering on the tennis duel between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. Only the youngest offspring Prince Louis was missing, about which the five-year-old “Daily Mail” was said to have been “very upset”. Kate is said to have told another viewer that day.
