Princess Diana’s 1985 Black Velvet Dress Sells for Record-Breaking Price at Auction

The dress, which was worn by Princess Diana in 1985, was sold at auction for 11 times higher price than originally expected, the media “BBC” reports.

The black velvet evening dress was sold at Julien’s Auctions for $1,148,080 (€1,047,008.78). The starting price of the auction was set at 100,000 dollars (91,196.50 euros).

Thanks to the impressive amount for which the dress was sold, a new record has been broken.

No other dress worn by Princess Diana has ever sold for such a high price at auction.

Princess Diana had worn the particular dress twice. She first appeared in public wearing this dress in Florence, Italy, in 1985, when she went to dinner with husband Charles. The second time the princess wore this dress was when she attended a concert by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986.

Previously, the most expensive dress worn by Diana sold at auction was a 1991 velvet dress by Victor Edelstein, which sold for $604,800 (€551,556.43) last January.
