Beatrice, the 32-year-old daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, borrowed the dress from her grandmother Queen Elizabeth. She first wore the evening dress during a state visit to Italy in 1961. Elizabeth wore the gown, designed by Sir Norman Hartnell, later more often.
Especially for Beatrice’s wedding, the dress was adapted by the royal dressmaker Angela Kelly and the fashion designer Stewart Parvin. They replaced the petticoat with silk tulle and added short puff sleeves.
