Prince William himself now under fire for anti-racism statement

“I am sickened by the racist insults against English players after last night’s game. It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behavior. It must stop now and everyone involved must be held accountable,” William wrote on Twitter a day after the 3-2 loss.

But that the prince stands up for the football players who are being treated racist is not well received by everyone. That has one main reason: Meghan Markle, the wife of his brother Harry.

“While I appreciate Prince William speaking out about racist comments towards footballers, where was this support when Meghan Markle was bullied and even considered taking her life over the comments?” tweet someone. “You have the opportunity to condemn racism – not just in football – when it is aimed at your own family members. Please use that power. It would speak volumes,” wrote another.

They mean the famous interview that Meghan and Harry gave to Oprah Winfrey in March. In it, the Duchess of Sussex told in full about the alleged racism that she had to endure within the royal family and by the (inter)national press.

With his statement, William stands up for three footballers in particular: Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. They are held responsible by some football fans for missing out on the title after missing their penalty.

The latter player reacted emotionally on Twitter. “All I can say is sorry,” he wrote after the missed penalty. He also said that he is used to receiving comments as a professional footballer. “Whether it’s the color of my skin, where I grew up, or, most recently, how I decide to spend my time off the field.” He continued, “I will never apologize for who I am and where I come from.”
