Prince William gave up the Paris Olympics to protect Kate during her chemotherapy

Prince William gave up attending the Paris Olympics to protect Kate. This is what he explained this Thursday, to Paralympic athletes he met in the north-east of England this Thursday.

“I was very excited to come, but after reading someone’s interview about Covid, I decided, because my wife was having chemotherapy, that I didn’t want to take the risk to bring Covid home,” he confided.

William met British Paralympic athletes Louise Fiddes, Maisie Summers-Newton and Tom Dean, during a visit to Birtley Community Pool in Tyne and Wear near Newcastle.

Princess Kate announced only a month ago that she had completed her chemotherapy treatment. In a long video message, published on social networks on September 9, the Princess of Wales expressed her “relief” at having finished with this treatment. She also highlighted how “the last nine months have been incredibly difficult” for her family.

First official engagement

The princess, who has reappeared in public on a few occasions in recent months, made her first official engagement on Wednesday since the end of her treatment.

Kensington Palace published on social networks a photo of Kate Middleton hugging a young 16-year-old photographer suffering from cancer, Liz Hatton.

It was during a surgical operation in January 2024 that Kate learned she had cancer. She then began preventive chemotherapy. During these months, Prince William had to deal with his wife’s cancer, but also that of his father, King Charles, who is still being treated for cancer.

After being absent for a few weeks at the start of the year, to be alongside Kate and their young children, he resumed his public commitments alone. In her message announcing her illness, the Princess of Wales explained that she “took time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis (…) to reassure them that it was going to go well”.
