review

The walls were still thick and high. Omiya Ardija U15 faced Kashima Antlers Junior Youth (Kashima JY) in the final. They aimed for their first crown, feeling the frustration of finishing as runners-up in 2012 and 2013, but once again fell one step short.

Omiya U15 faced the same starting lineup as the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the early 7th minute of the match, the team conceded the lead with an own goal from an opponent’s corner corner, but there was no damage.

“Since it was still early, I told the players there was no need to panic.” (Coach Yusuke Tanno)

They built up well and used long vertical balls to push Kashima JY. The set play resulted in the equalizing goal. In the 17th minute, Yoshito Kumada skillfully pushed the ball in at the far side from Yusuke Takahashi’s corner kick.

“Nakazawa (Rin)’s mark was stronger, so I asked him to give me a ball that would take advantage of that, and the right ball came just in time.I just let it go.” (Kumada)

Once they found a rhythm from this tie, good chances continued. In the 20th minute, a through ball from Shota Ohira went to Yuzuki Kobayashi, but it was blocked by the opposing goalkeeper. In the 22nd minute, Daito Nakajima connected with Kobayashi’s ball and Takahashi took a mid-range shot. In the 24th minute, Kumada threatened the Kashima JY goal again from a corner kick. In the 28th minute, Nakajima broke through the right side and delivered a cross to Ohira, but the timing was slightly off. In the 36th minute, Nakajima got through to Yunao Kidera’s long pass and aimed for a shot. However, these attacks, which fell just short, may have had an impact in the second half.

Immediately after the start of the second half, in the 42nd minute, Kashima JY quickly spread the ball and conceded a goal. He again takes the lead. With Kashima JY’s attack increasing the pressure even further, Coach Tanno replaced Ohira with Takumi Ishikawa in the 51st minute. They moved Edward Masahide to the front and placed Ishikawa on the left side, aiming to push back.

Ishikawa shined in the 56th minute. After receiving a pass from Kobayashi, he reversed his moves to evade two opposing defenders, and then made a big play by making a feint to miss another defender. They were able to pass it straight into the opponent’s goal and catch up.

Goal becomes a good camphor agent. They approached the goal from the left side in the 61st and 65th minutes, but were unable to score. In the 78th minute, while fending off Kashima JY’s attack, Kobayashi dribbled and was fouled just outside the penalty area, giving him a good chance for a set piece. Kobayashi aimed for this free kick himself, but it was deflected away by the opposing goalkeeper.

With the score tied at 2-2 after 80 minutes in each half, the game went into overtime with 10 minutes in each half. Omiya U15 wanted to take the lead, but at the start of the first half of extra time, Kobayashi’s breakthrough led to Nakajima to Edward, but they were unable to take a shot, and gradually Kashima JY’s rhythm started to fall into place. Then, in the 87th minute, Kashima JY’s CK. They were able to sink clear balls and gave up the lead three times.

At the start of the second half of extra time, Yasutoshi Fukuhara was brought on in place of Nakajima, but signs of fatigue were beginning to show as they were constantly being pushed ahead. In the end, they couldn’t take a shot in the 20 minutes of the first and second halves of overtime. The battle, which lasted over 100 minutes, ended in a score of 2-3.

After the match, Coach Tanno said, “We were able to give what we had built up, and I think it was a game in which Kashima was slightly better than us.” Captain Yasuto Kanda also said, “We made a mistake in the last minute. “We weren’t able to make a decision when it was a fine line at the end, like whether or not we could get the ball out.” It’s not like there weren’t many opportunities. It’s not like I was constantly being overwhelmed by Kashima JY. There were many possibilities to turn the game around. Really, there was just one more step missing somewhere.

As a club, we were unable to fulfill the “third time’s truth.” But the title isn’t everything.

“I think there is great value in aiming to be number one in Japan, but this should not become the goal. The most important thing is how the players will grow in the future by gaining this kind of experience. The players It’s a very bitter memory for me, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how the players will grow from here.” (Coach Tanno)

Throughout the tournament, many senior players, including those who are currently away from the club, visited the match venue in person and continued to encourage their junior players. Although we may not have achieved a good result, it was a meaningful tournament that gave us a renewed sense of unity as a club.
