Prince Nikita Lobanov-Rostovski was born in 1935 in Sofia. He is a descendant of an old noble Russian family, going back to the creator of the Russian state – Prince Rurik. His grandfather, Prince Ivan Lobanov-Rostovsky, left Russia illegally in 1919 with his sons (one of them Dmitry), the father of the future famous banker and collector. His mother – Irina Lobanova-Rostovska, nee Virubova, is from the old Virubov family, to whom he also belongs to the most trusted court of the last Russian emperor – Anna Virubova.
In 1946, the Lobanovi-Rostovski family tried to cross the Bulgarian border, but they were arrested on Greek territory. 11-year-old Nikita spent 12 months in Sofia Central Prison. After half a year, his mother was released, and a little later his father. In 1948, however, Dmitry Lobanov-Rostovsky was kidnapped by the secret services and, as his son found out years later, was killed in a death camp.
Nikita Lobanov-Rostovski became a republican hero among Bulgarian youth in swimming, and in 1953 he and his mother managed to leave Bulgaria. They are helped by a relative in Paris – Nikolai Virubov, a close associate of General de Gaulle, and the UN Commissioner for Refugees. In 1956, the hereditary prince graduated in geology at Oxford, and specialized in economic geology at Columbia University in New York. He traveled the world in search of diamond deposits, rare metals and oil reserves. He was an expert in various banks.
