RoyaltyAs of this week, Prince Joachim, the 29-year-old son of Princess Astrid (58) and Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este (65), has a diploma from the prestigious Harvard University. And he is by no means the only hard worker in their family: his brothers and sisters all have a diploma to say the least. Favoritism? Absolutely not, as it turns out. The prince is simply the example of the new generation of royals, who have no choice but to work hard. “They don’t just want to sit in a red, plush sofa anymore.”

The fact that Prince Joachim was educated at Harvard Business School in Boston, USA, fits perfectly with the new generation of royals. Over the past fifteen or twenty years we have seen a real shift in this area within the royal family. King Philippe, for example, is the first crown prince who did not receive a private education. Prince Laurent then took lessons at the abbey school of Zevenkerken and later also at the Midwest University in the United States. Something that, according to Kathy Pauwels, did not get him well. “He often called his parents back then because he was very lonely.”
