The feud between Prince William and Prince Harry continues to stir the United Kingdom. After the two unveiled a statue of their late mother Diana together last Friday – but also separately – author Omid Scobie now says Prince William’s entourage made up stories about his brother’s mental state.

Prince Harry’s biographer, Omid Scobie, speaks in a new documentary that aired in the UK on Saturday. In it, he claims that the Crown Prince’s staff deliberately made up stories to discredit Prince Harry.

It’s no coincidence, says Scobie, that the “lying campaign” started just after Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s trip through South Africa. There, the two had for the first time confirmed that things were not going well between the two brothers and Markle had indicated in an interview that she was not feeling well and that she was “trying to survive”. When the interviewer asked her if she was “okay”, the American actress cried and said that not many people had asked her recently if she was okay.

Shortly afterwards, messages were sent out, Omid Scobie says, that Prince William was concerned about Harry’s mental health. “But those messages were deliberately ‘planted’ by Prince William’s entourage and were the basis of a further separation of the brothers. It was no coincidence that shortly after that interview came on TV – even the day after – messages came suddenly from Kensington Palace. Whether William ordered it or not: we will probably never know. But it did come from his entourage, which he owns.”

The documentary Harry & William: What Went Wrong, was broadcast on ITV on Saturday night and also covers the role of Meghan Markle. “She arrived in the British Royal Family with passion, ready to work,” Scobie said. “That immediately caused some friction. Markle certainly wasn’t someone who would suddenly change himself to please people around him pleasen. I think Harry and Meghan should have been warned: You are not the stars of the show here. There is a hierarchy and you are not very high.”
