Prince Harry turns 40 this Sunday. A very special date that he will spend focused on enjoying life with his wife Meghan Markle and his children, Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3. It is with them that he plans to celebrate his entry into the new decade, followed by a meeting with close friends from different parts of the world.
What is not expected is any rapprochement with his brother William, from whom he is more distant than ever. The Duke of Sussex’s alleged lack of interest in Kate Middleton’s progress during her cancer, which he announced she had recovered from less than a week ago, has been the straw that broke the camel’s back for the Prince of Wales, who is already at odds with his brother over the publication of his controversial memoirs entitled ‘Spare: In the Shadow’, in its Spanish edition, and his continuous public statements attacking the British royal family through interviews or documentaries.
With no hope of reconciliation, Harry is continuing his life in California, United States, where he moved with his wife and children, after ceasing to be an active member of the royal family in January 2020. A decision he made to “break the cycle of pain and suffering,” he explained. “What we did was walk away instead of quitting. It was a really difficult environment, it was destroying my mental health,” he confessed. Since then he has focused on his work at the Archewell Foundation, the non-profit organization he founded with his wife, and is carrying out a series of audiovisual projects. The next one, a documentary that will be broadcast in December about polo, one of his greatest passions.
Smoothing things over At the age of 40, the Duke of Sussex has reflected on his life in which the most important thing is his family: “The best gift I have received is, without a doubt, my children. I enjoy watching them grow every day and I love being their father,” he told People magazine through his spokesperson. Children whom he tries to protect from the media spotlight at all costs after his negative experience with the media and the media harassment experienced by the late Lady Di, who died in a tragic car accident during a chase with photographers in Paris in 1997. According to a friend, “as a father and husband, Harry is determined to ensure that history does not repeat itself.”
Looking to the future, there are those who speculate that he intends to smooth things over with his father and return to Great Britain. In this regard, the youngest son of Charles III has reportedly consulted with friends and former aides to see how best to do so without raising too much dust. Among the possibilities is his participation in low-profile events in Great Britain to gain popularity and the affection of the people in his country of origin.
In any case, for the moment, his most immediate plans involve celebrating his 40th birthday with his closest friends. A circle that includes the ex-soldier JJ Chalmers, the polo player Nacho Figueras and the filmmaker Arthur Landon, and which in recent years has included Hollywood stars such as George Clooney and Oprah Winfrey.
