Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s trip to Colombia has been history for about two weeks. Then on August 30, 2024, the big surprise: the journalist who was able to accompany the Sussexes exclusively is now processing her experiences publicly.

“There is actually no way to properly prepare for a trip with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.” With these words, Bianca Betancourt, a journalist for “Harper’s Bazaar,” begins her article about her tour with Prince Harry, 39, and Duchess Meghan, 43. Betancourt was allowed to accompany the couple on their multi-day trip through Colombia – and had to experience first-hand what it means to fight for “a lofty goal.”

Prince Harry + Duchess Meghan: Companion experienced “unjustified criticism”

For four days, the journalist experienced Harry and Meghan up close and personal. She experienced a great contrast – between the way she got to know the Sussexes and the tone in which “these real events are discussed on the Internet”. During the Colombia tour, “everything they do and where they go always revolves around their mission to ‘show themselves and do good'”, Betancourt emphasises. At no point was the focus on the couple’s “pomp and circumstance of fame”.

In Colombia, Harry and Meghan visited several schools and met countless children and teenagers. “Whatever it is,” Betancourt now writes, “their ability to get young people to open up about their lives and their goals is undeniable.” The children were “thrilled” when they saw the Sussexes. And they, in turn, “paused for every hug, every handshake and every request for a selfie.”

These encounters gave not only the couple and their fellow human beings, but also the journalist who accompanied them a “positive attitude”. Betancourt explains why she could use this energy in the preparation: “Because any kind of connection with the couple […] means exposing yourself to unjustified criticism from, well, the world. Within hours of announcing that I would be joining them on their tour, I was being called, among other things, a con artist, a mouthpiece, and a calculated piece of their PR puzzle – and that was before I had even sent out a single report,” Betancourt continued.

“Their attention to detail will help them make a big impact”

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have been working for years to make the Internet a fair and healthy place for all people. But even their accompanying journalist had to admit: “There is no doubt that it is an ambitious goal to […] especially when the youngest generation is a group that was born with the Internet at their fingertips.” And yet Betancourt remains optimistic and positive – perhaps precisely because Harry and Meghan are so disciplined in pursuing their goal.

She continues: “If anything, what has impressed me most as a witness to the Sussexes’ activities is the intention with which they use their platform. Regardless of public opinion, [sie] committed to continuing to help.” Even for Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, this is “not a must – after all, many celebrities do not see social service as part of their role, but as a calling.” Bianca Betancourt is certain: “The attention to detail – in the way [Harry und Meghan] how they use their fame, how they move in the world and how they choose who they work with – will help them make the greatest impact in the future.”
