They say they have narrowly avoided a tragedy. British Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and her mother say they escaped an “almost catastrophic chase” with paparazzi, according to his spokesperson who spoke on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, after a ceremony organized in New York, United States, by Ms. Foundation for Women, a feminist organization which notably rewarded Meghan Markle for her commitment to women. But the end of the ceremony could have turned for the worst, according to the couple.
“Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as well as Ms. Ragland (Meghan’s mother, editor’s note), were involved in an almost catastrophic chase, caused by an extremely aggressive circle of paparazzi”, denounces a door- word of Harry and his wife in a press release.
“A frantic race”
“This frantic race, which lasted two hours, nearly caused collisions with other drivers on the road, pedestrians, as well as with two New York police officers,” the statement continued.
New York police, for their part, confirmed that “many photographers made it difficult for the Duke and Duchess to travel”. And specifies that no one was injured or arrested after this incident.
“Although being a public figure arouses some public interest, it should never have an impact on anyone’s safety,” said the Duke and Duchess, who also denounce the dissemination of images captured during of the incident.
Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, left the British Royal Family in early 2020 to move to California due to conflict and tension and media pressure. Harry has long blamed the press and paparazzi for causing the car crash in Paris in August 1997 that killed his mother, Princess Diana.
Half a dozen vehicles
According to a source close to the couple, the chase involved half a dozen vehicles “at the wheel of which individuals were driving recklessly and dangerously for the motorcade and everyone around”. “The chase could have been fatal,” said the source.
Asked by the Washington Post, the taxi driver confided that he did not feel in “danger” during the incident. “It didn’t feel like a chase like in a movie. They were quiet and scared but this is New York – they were safe,” he added.
Harry came in a breeze and alone on May 6 to London for the coronation of his father Charles III. The couple is indeed very unpopular in the UK. The tabloids are ruthless and Harry has several legal disputes with them.
In the United Kingdom, the “Sussex” are accused of having slammed the door in 2020, then criticized the powerful and secret royal family, before revealing the backstage and the dissensions to the whole world. In “The Substitute”, a huge bestseller written by Harry, William, the heir to the throne, is presented as angry, to the point in 2019 of having thrown his brother to the ground during an argument over Meghan.
