Dallas – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle donated to a Dallas women’s shelter after an unprecedented winter storm left the organization homeless and with damaged pipes.
Genesis Women’s Shelter and Support, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, announced Sunday night that they had received a donation from the Archewell Foundation, a non-profit organization created by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The shelter thanked the couple in a tweet and said the funds received will be used to replace the roof on their transitional home for battered women and help meet their immediate needs.
Genesis Women’s Shelter and Support closed for the first time in 35 years after last week’s winter storm, which cut power across much of the state, including the organization’s apartments and emergency shelter.
Today, the news of our damages reached Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex! Through their nonprofit, they are supporting us by replacing the roof at our transitional housing facility & helping us meet our immediate needs. Genesis CEO Jan Langbein said the pipes burst and flooded the organization’s school.
With the destruction of the roof, the refugees were relocated to hotels, other shelters and the homes of friends and family.
Genesis said in a tweet on Saturday that the shelter had reopened and that donations have arrived from across the country.

This might be just a photo of a bed, but it was taken in our emergency shelter today & that reflects the fact that a survivor of domestic violence will have a safe place to rest her head tonight. We are so grateful for the support we’ve received from all 50 states – YOU did this! pic.twitter.com/f5YSzZk3t1
