According to the biographer, it had been clear for some time that Prince Charles did not want the couple to earn money from the monarchy any longer. The prince gave the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a “considerable amount”, but would meanwhile be “relieved” that that situation is now a thing of the past. “I can imagine Prince Charles is relieved that they are no longer on his payroll. And the British public will also be relieved, because Harry and Meghan can now pay back out of their own pockets what they still owe to Frogmore Cottage. (that Harry and Meghan had renovated for 2.8 million euros, ed.) to owe. So it is a win-win situation.”

Harry and Meghan announced at the beginning of last year that they wanted to distance themselves from the British royal family. The couple immediately stated that they would no longer use the title His/Her Royal Highness and expressed their wish to become financially independent from the royal family. Yet they still received a deposit from Prince Charles of the Duchy of Cornwall, which consists of 130,000 hectares of land with castles, holiday homes and even a cricket stadium. It was about 5.5 million euros, although that was the last time they could count on that income.

Increasingly profitable
“The current Prince of Wales chooses to use a significant portion of his revenue from the Duchy to cover the costs of his public and charitable work, as well as the public and private lives of his family, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and their children,” read the Duchy’s website until recently, which has also become increasingly profitable in recent decades. In 2019 alone — the most recent figures available — the British Royal Family earned around £22.6 million from operating the Duchy. Money that from now on should no longer be shared with Harry and Meghan.
