The king was crowned with the crown of Saint Edward, used only within the framework of this ritual. Made for King Charles II in 1661, it weighs almost two kilos. Surmounted by an orb and a cross, symbolizing the Christian world, it is made of solid gold and set with rubies, amethysts, sapphires, garnets, topazes and tourmalines. King Charles III will exchange it at the end of the ceremony for the “Imperial State Crown”. Just as his mother did, he will then wear it to the annual Opening of Parliament ceremony. Some 2868 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds and 5 rubies decorate it.
As for Queen Consort Camilla, she wears the crown of Queen Mary, as announced last February. Although it has undergone some modification work, in particular by including diamonds that belonged to Queen Elizabeth II, it is the first time that a queen consort has used an existing crown.
