The biographer Andrew Lownie calls that decision “absurd”. Documents about the royal family are usually not available, but Lownie believes this is not the case now, because Andrew held a government position that was paid with British tax money.
Andrew had to leave his post when a photo surfaced in 2011 of the prince with Jeffrey Epstein, the wealthy businessman who had already served a prison sentence for sex offenses. One of Epstein’s victims says she was “lent” to Andrew in 2001. She accused him of sexual abuse and sued him.
In February last year, Andrew settled with the woman for an undisclosed sum. Andrew also had to resign from his duties for the royal family in 2019 because of the allegations.
