From Sky to Prime Video: Wimbledon will be shown on a new provider in the next four years. The Amazon streaming service Prime Video has secured exclusive broadcasting rights until 2027. “Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament and one of the most prestigious sporting events ever, with a long history of success for German players and athletes,” said Alex Green, Managing Director at Prime Video Sport, Europe.

This means that Sky will no longer be the rights holder for Wimbledon. Sky had been broadcasting the grass classic since 2007. In 2022, the pay TV broadcaster extended the contract with Wimbledon by one year. Now a long partnership comes to a sudden end. A Sky spokesman said: “We have decided not to renew the Wimbledon rights. But with the extension of the ATP rights and the new acquisition of the WTA rights, we are more than ever the number 1 tennis broadcaster in Germany.” Sky will offer more than 80 tournaments and over 4,000 games in the coming year.

For German tennis fans, this change means one thing above all: the fragmentation of tennis broadcasts continues after it was announced in the summer that the streaming platform Sportdeutschland.tv had taken over the rights for the US Open. If you want to follow all major tournaments and competitions live, you have to keep an eye on five channels/streaming services.

Prime customers in Germany and Austria should be able to use the offer at no additional cost. Membership costs 8.99 euros per month or 89.90 euros per year. The rights package includes exclusive broadcasting of all rounds, both men’s and women’s.

Prime is thus expanding its rights portfolio. In Germany, the streaming service also offers live Champions League games, among other things.
