Starting very, very strong, with two memorable episodes, the second season of Bosch : Legacy condemns itself to disappointing afterwards, inevitably. However, despite flaws that were not in the original series, we remain perfectly addicted to this faithful adaptation of the work of Michael Connelly…
The first season of Bosch : Legacythe new series continuing the adaptation of the investigations of Harry Bosch, the star detective of Michael Connelly, now retired from the LAPD and gone “to the dark side” since working as an investigator in the service of a “defense law” firm, ended on an unbearable cliffhanger: the kidnapping of Maddy, Bosch’s daughter, by the serial rapist she was tracking. We had to wait more than a year to discover the fate reserved for him… even if the first episode of the second season (The Lady Vanishesa nod to Hitch) begins a few minutes after the end of the premiere: that’s the magic of TV series!
It must be recognized that the start of this second season is a pure shot of adrenaline, combining extreme tension, strong emotional intensity – since the beginning of the first series, Bosch, when she was almost only a child , we became attached to the character of Maddie, and felt the ordeal all the more through her and her father going through during the first two episodes – and a well-thought-out twist. And then there is the undeniable bonus of finding all the characters from the original series, whose brief appearance makes us feel how much, despite everything, we lost in the handover to Bosch : Legacy. But the real problem is that, logically, when the series then resumes its “usual” rhythm, the impression of a deceleration – and therefore of a disappointment – is almost fatal.
It must be said that the two narrative threads run in parallel (usual procedure with the series and with Michael Connelly) are not really exciting: by returning to the “Jamesbondian” episode of the refinery in the first season, which was its big weak point, and by offering us a new investigation which this time turns out to be much too confusing, Connelly and its screenwriters do not make it easy for us to join!
Fortunately, little by little, the season regains its punch, thanks to some great “bad guy” characters (because as Hitchcock said, blah blah blah…), and the excellent idea of building on the ambiguity of professional admiration than Maddie (Madison Lintzmore confident than in the first season, when she is now a central character) feels for her father (Titus Welliverdull, but still perfectly adequate), while this one – who has never been, as we know, a model cop – has less ethically acceptable behavior.
Which brings us to a nice conclusion, a nice coup from Honey Chandler (Mimi Rogers), of which we appreciate the little gift of a final face to face with Irvin Irving (the great Lance Reddick, unfortunately since disappeared). And then there is this final psychological cliffhanger, ultimately much less stereotypical than that of the first season. And what, above all, reinforces our addiction to this series which, without fanfare and without much media support, has established itself over the years as one of those that we have the most pleasure in rediscovering every year.
So we’ll see you again in the fall of 2024, to follow the next stages of “Maddie’s life”…
