In the exciting Amazon film “I’m Your Woman”, Jean is not a femme fatale, but an unhappy housewife. But then she has to get to safety.
FromMartin Schwickert
Film history is full of bullies cultivating their criminal narcissism. With “The Irishman”, Martin Scorcese challenged the genre’s politics of glorification by telling his mafia epic from the perspective of a loyal henchman who looked back bitterly on his botched murderous life. Now follows with Julia Hart’s “I’m Your Woman”, a film that takes on a completely different perspective: that of the gangster bride.
Suddenly nothing is right in “I’m Your Woman”
Jean (Rachel Brosnahan) is not a cool femme fatale, but an unhappy housewife. “Eddie and Jean met and fell in love. Eddie and Jean got married and bought a house. Eddie and Jean wanted a child and they didn’t have one. So Eddie kisses Jean every morning, leaves the house and Jean is alone. ”In these laconic sentences Jean sums up her existence in the suburban philistine idyll of the 1970s. But then Eddie comes home and instead of a new dress he brought her a child. “This is yours now,” he says and that everything is okay.
Less than two minutes later, nothing is okay anymore. Eddie’s accomplice storms into the house and tells Jean to pack her things. With the child and a bag full of money, she climbs into the car with Cal (Arinzé Kene), which is supposed to bring her to safety. Jean knew that her husband made his money in a not entirely legal way, but nothing more. She is put in a “safe house”, is not supposed to talk to anyone and is completely on her own. After a few weeks, Cal’s wife Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake) joins her, who has to get to safety with her son and father. When Cal does not come as agreed, the two women drive into town to take matters into their own hands.
“I’m Your Woman” is an exciting gangster film
Director Julia Hart sends her heroine on an odyssey in permanent escape mode. The journey first leads into solitude, in which Jean has to find himself and laboriously work out of his own passivity. In her highly concentrated narrative, Hart develops a harmonious rhythm between suddenly breaking action and calm moments of calm. Rachel Brosnahan, who became known through the Amazon comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, shows her range of acting and gives the character convincing contours. With a clear conception, atmospheric density and excellent acting, “I’m Your Woman” works as an exciting gangster film and proves that every film genre can be narrated profitably from the female perspective.
