Doha, the capital of Qatar in the Arabian Peninsula is hosting the fifth United Nations Conference on Least Countries (LDCs). Mrs. the Prime Minister, Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé, at the head of a high-level delegation took an active part on Saturday March 04, 2023, on behalf of the Head of State, His Excellency Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé at the summit of heads of State and Government of the Group of Least Developed Countries ahead of the conference.
The work chaired by the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres in the presence of several Heads of State and Government, including Prime Minister Victoire Tomégah-Dogbé, will make it possible to develop the plans and partnerships necessary to materialize the promises and ambitions of the Doha action program adopted in 2022 for the next ten years. It is also about mobilizing additional international support for LDCs and overcoming structural challenges, eradicating poverty and achieving the development goals set at the international level.
At the opening of the meeting, the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, made a diagnosis of the factors which are still hampering the development of these least developed countries, in particular the inequalities generated by the economic system and above all, the over-indebtedness which makes it impossible their development. He called on developed countries to invest more in LDCs which badly need support.
On behalf of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister thanked the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Ben Hamad Al Thani for the quality of the welcome and the perfect organization of the summit. She reiterated Togo’s commitment to pursue its actions for a harmonious development of the country through socio-economic inclusion.
“My country Togo is delighted with the holding of this conference because it comes at a pivotal moment for our countries which are facing multiple crises: health, economic, climate and security crisis. These crises that destabilize our countries. I would like to invite you to mobilize to carry out even stronger actions to accelerate the impact of our results. And that’s what our country, Togo has understood. Through our 2020-2025 government roadmap, which focuses above all on inclusion in all its dimensions, with the flagship project of biometric identification, the register of persons and households, and health insurance,” said Ms. the Prime Minister in his speech.
It should be noted that the 46 least developed countries in the world, including Togo, take part in this high-level event.
