As a thank you for the great effort, Hessian Prime Minister Boris Rhein is supporting Hessian animal shelters and animal protection associations with special funds this year. The animal rescue service Frankfurt e. V. Tierherberge Egelsbach in Egelsbach, the animal shelter Dreieich e. V., the animal protection association Seligenstadt u. U.E. V. and the Animal Welfare Association Offenbach e. V. everyone receives 500 euros. “Rising energy costs, higher feed and veterinary expenses as well as more animals on the wards: Animal shelters in Hessen are also suffering from the consequences of the war in Ukraine and are still suffering from the corona pandemic. To help in this tense situation, the state government of Hesse is supporting animal shelters and animal protection associations in Hesse with a total of 20,500 euros this year,” Prime Minister Boris Rhein said in Wiesbaden on Thursday. A total of 41 and thus all animal shelters and animal protection associations in Hesse, awarded to the German Animal Welfare Association, each receive 500 euros from Lotto-Tronc funds. These funds, which are spent on charitable, social, sporting and cultural purposes, come from the proceeds of lotteries.
Rhein praised the work of animal shelters and animal protection associations: “The numerous volunteers in animal shelters and animal associations do a great job every day. Your work is essential for animal welfare,” said the Prime Minister and promised not to leave animal shelters alone in view of the difficult situation and rising energy costs. With the state program “Hessen Stands Together” , the state government also helps non-profits if the energy crisis leads to liquidity bottlenecks that threaten their existence and federal aid is not enough to stabilize the situation.
Rhein also highlighted the effects of the corona pandemic on animal shelters. “The Hessian animal shelters are having a hard time due to the pandemic. Dogs bought as companions during the pandemic are now being taken to shelters in many places because they don’t want to take the responsibility that comes with it. This behavior poses even greater challenges for animal shelters. We would like to help with the special funds,” said the Prime Minister. “Anyone who can should therefore support Hessian animal shelters, for example with a donation.”
