Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Meeting with Armenian Community in Munich and Germany – Update on Talks with Azerbaijan and Ukraine

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a meeting the day before, on February 18, with representatives of the Armenian community of Munich and neighboring regions of Germany. As reported by the Department of Information and Public Relations of the Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia, during the meeting, the prime minister first touched upon the results of the meetings and discussions held within the framework of the Munich Security Conference, as well as the meeting with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, held through the mediation of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz .

Nikol Pashinyan answered a number of questions from those present, which related to the challenges facing Armenia, steps to overcome them and other topics.

“In fact, there was an important question on the (negotiations) table: whether the parties would confirm the previously reached agreements that were reached during the quadripartite meeting held in Prague (in October 2022 – Ord,) as well as during negotiations in Brussels. In fact, to summarize, the main result of the meeting is that the parties remain faithful to these agreements,” Pashinyan noted.

In the near future, a meeting will take place between the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, and then the commissions of the two Transcaucasian republics on border delimitation issues, the prime minister informed.

“In general, the implementation of these agreements will help and will help reduce border tensions. We are determined to adhere to these agreements,” he emphasized.

Pashinyan also touched upon the issue of confirming the borders between the former republics of the USSR on the basis of the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration on the creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which, according to him, should also apply to the situation in Ukraine.

“We respect the Alma-Ata Declaration, but it obliges not only us. They themselves were the initiators, since it began with the Belovezhskaya Accords, by which Russia, Ukraine and Belarus decided that the Soviet Union no longer existed, and they became independent states, recognizing each other’s borders. We proceed from the fact that the Alma-Ata Declaration is the foundation for the recognition of our independence and territorial integrity, and the same should be applied to Ukraine. This document is important for all of us, and its destruction could lead to the collapse of the system,” said the head of government.

He also emphasized that Armenia is not Russia’s ally on the Ukrainian issue, expressing sincere regret at the inability to influence the situation.

As reported EADaily, the presidents of Ukraine and Azerbaijan met last Saturday on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. At the opening of negotiations Vladimir Zelensky and Ilham Aliyev “Once again they declared support for the territorial integrity of both states,” they indicated in Kyiv. During the meeting, Aliyev made the following statement: “Our support for the sovereignty of the territorial integrity of Ukraine is unshakable, and this will not change. We, as a country that suffered from occupation, understand your situation perfectly and wish peace to Ukrainians and Ukraine.”
