Prime Minister Narendra Modi Announces National Space Day and Commemorates Chandrayaan 3 Landing on Lunar Surface

BENGALURU: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that August 23 will be observed as National Space Day to commemorate the landing of the Chandrayaan 3 Vikram lander on the lunar surface. The place where the lander landed will be known as ‘Shivashakti Point’ and the place where Chandrayaan 2 crashed will be known as ‘Thiranga’.

The Prime Minister was at the ISRO Bengaluru ISTRAC center to congratulate the scientists behind the Chandrayaan 3 mission. The place where the Moon Impact Probe, a part of Chandrayaan 1, landed is known as ‘Jawahar Point’.

“Shiva evokes the auspicious state and Shakti the feminine power. In 2019, when Chandrayaan 2 missed its target, there was a proposal to call that point ‘Thiranga’. But it was decided to name the Chandrayaan mission only if it succeeds.

‘Thiranga’ (tricolor) gives strength to face all challenges. At the time of the successful mission, though he was abroad, his mind was on ISRO. You own the most inspiring moments.

Everyone should know the hard work done by the scientists for the historical success. I salute the scientists” – said the Prime Minister.

Modi arrived in Bengaluru from Greece yesterday morning. The Prime Minister was received by scientists under the leadership of ISRO Chairman S. Somanath at Istrac.

Somnath explained the operation of the Vikram lander and presented him with pictures of the lander and the rover on the lunar surface.
