Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has resigned. He made the announcement today in a televised speech. Hamdok spoke of a political deadlock in Sudan after the military coup in October.
Hamdok said a roundtable is needed to reach a new deal for Sudan’s transition to a functioning democracy.
After the coup, the prime minister was dropped off. He became arrested and placed under house arrest. In November did he return as prime minister, after he and the military struck a deal.
As a former UN official, the former prime minister has been the face of the civilians who share power with the military since the fall of former dictator Omar al Bashir in 2019. They would continue to share that power in the run-up to free elections, but since 2019 the country was far from stable.
Massademonstraties
After the army coup in October, there was a lot of talk at home and abroad demonstrated. Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in Sudan and roadblocks were erected in the capital, Khartoum.
