Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – The state of Saxony-Anhalt has fired a primary school teacher because she refused to grant a mandatory additional hour per week. “In view of the shortage of skilled workers, it is always regrettable to lose staff,” said Secretary of State for Education Jürgen Böhm of the German Press Agency on Wednesday. “However, in this specific case, all milder measures were exhausted by the school and the state school authority over a period of several months.”
In order to ensure fewer absences, teachers have had to stand in front of the class for an additional hour a week since the Easter holidays. They can have this paid out or accumulate it in a working time account. The teacher in question had refused for some time and several times to do the advance lesson, the state school authority said on request. This represents a refusal to work, which has consequences.
According to the information, there were interviews and a warning before the termination. “That’s why the staff council ultimately raised no objections to the dismissal.” The teacher knew exactly “what consequences her actions will lead to”. The “Magdeburger Volksstimme” reported about it first.
The left called on Education Minister Eva Feußner (CDU) to intervene and withdraw the termination. “It leaves you speechless that the school authorities can come up with the idea of kicking out a deserving teacher after 39 years of service without notice because she has explained understandably that she cannot teach 28 hours a week,” said education policy spokesman Thomas Lippmann.
According to the state education authority, the termination is the only case of this kind in Saxony-Anhalt.
