A 62-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, located in northern India, had complained to her GP about increasing stomach discomfort.
Her stomach just grew and grew, and the woman asked for help, according to the news agency Jam Press.
Got medicine
But the woman claims that the doctors only gave her medication and assured her that everything would be fine again.
The diagnosis prevents her from smiling
Last week, the worried woman was at Adarsh Hospital, where doctors decided to operate on her to remove the cause of the pain.
But when the surgeons began the five-hour operation, they got a bit of a surprise.
In the woman’s stomach, they found a 20-kilo tumor – equivalent to the weight of 20 cartons of milk or 40 packets of dairy butter.
Abdominal cancer
Rajul Abhishek was involved in the operation on the woman, and he says that they have subsequently examined and diagnosed the tumor.
He says that the tumor was a so-called primary peritoneal carcinoma (PPC), or peritoneal cancer.
Macabre find in bloody duffel bag
according to KreftLex Peritoneal cancer is difficult to distinguish from ovarian cancer.
It begins to develop in the thin layer of tissue that covers the inside of the abdomen. This layer is called the peritoneum, writes Cancer Research UK.
Affects women
The disease mainly affects women, and is very rare in men. The vast majority are over 60 years old when they are diagnosed, according to the website.
– No one deserves to die like this
The causes of PPC are not known.
– Most cancers are due to several different factors that work together. But research suggests that a small number of those affected by PPC may be linked to hereditary defects in the genes BRCA 1 and BRCA 2, they write.
