Jakarta: A heart attack occurs due to disrupted blood flow in the coronary arteries, resulting in the heart muscle experiencing a myocardial infarction. This means the death of the heart muscle which causes the heart to not be able to work and pump blood as it should.
Heart and Blood Vessel Specialist from Heartology Cardiovascular Hospital Dr. Dr. Jajang Sinardja, Sp.JP(K) said that a heart attack is an emergency case that must be treated immediately by a medical team and a heart specialist. Heart attacks are sudden and can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated in a short time.
The atypical symptoms of a heart attack often make patients think that they only have stomach acid disorders. This needs to be watched out for, considering that heart attack treatment must be done as early and quickly as possible to save the patient’s life.
“Actually, there are no definite symptoms of a heart attack. So, when you feel like your heart has stopped within ten seconds, immediately go to the health service for treatment,” explained Dr. Jajang in a media briefing at Heartology Cardiovascular Hospital Jakarta, Friday, October 20 2023.
Primary PCI procedure in treating heart attack patients
According to Dr. Jajang, there should be more Heart Attack Centers in Indonesia, considering that quite a few people have a high risk of heart attacks. It is also necessary to be directly integrated with the cath lab (catheterization room) with door to balloon time following international standards, namely immediate treatment within a maximum period of 90 minutes.
Door to balloon time is a term to measure the most optimal time for treating a heart attack. Starting from the patient entering the emergency room, until the balloon is installed to open the blocked coronary artery, within 90 minutes.
Emergency catheterization in cases of heart attack is often called Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Primary PCI) in medical terms. This procedure aims to save heart attack patients, by reopening the coronary arteries so that blood flow to the heart muscle returns to normal.
“Primary PCI is a non-surgical intervention procedure, simply by inserting a small flexible tube (catheter) through the wrist or groin vessels to the blocked coronary artery, and opening the blockage with a balloon or stent,” explained Dr. Single
Furthermore, this net-shaped device will be inserted into the blood vessel blockage that causes a heart attack. Then the device will be implanted in the body forever.
Don’t worry, there is no expiration date that requires the patient to replace the device. The quicker it is handled, of course the survivor rate will also be higher.
Will it heal after doing the Primary PCI procedure?
Even though it is said to be good for treating heart attacks, it cannot be denied that the network can again be covered in bad fats (LDL). This depends on whether the patient maintains their health or not.
“If you have done PCI and continue smoking, it still influences the presence of bad fats, it’s the same. So, it is necessary to emphasize a healthy lifestyle,” stressed Dr. Single.
Apart from that, dr. Jajang also does not recommend inserting many mesh tubes into the body. If the patient’s condition is serious, surgery is necessary.
