Pride is more than the Canal Parade: what is there to do in Amsterdam?

Most people know Pride Amsterdam mainly as the boat parade that sails through the center of the capital on the first Saturday in August, but the week-long event is more than that. From July 30 to August 7 there is plenty to do in and around the city. NU.nl lists some highlights.

Many theatres, cinemas and even sports clubs have programming especially for Pride. Activities such as Drag Bingo can be found all over the city. Or you can join an LGBTQ+ reading club in a cafe.

Pride Walk

Pride Amsterdam starts as always with the Pride Walk. Participants will gather on Dam Square on Saturday 30 July to demonstrate for equal rights for the LGBTQ+ community. During the Pride Walk towards Vondelpark, the flags of all countries where homosexuality is punishable are carried. Pride Park will then take place in Vondelpark, an event with artistic and sporting activities that lasts until 10 p.m.

Pride Photo

Just like in 2019, the last time a full-fledged Pride Amsterdam could be celebrated before the corona virus threw a spanner in the works, there will also be a free outdoor photo exhibition this year. The photos can be seen on Gustav Mahlerplein, next to Amsterdam Zuid train station. The exhibition consists of twenty photos. They are provided with a QR code, which you can use to get more information about the works via the website.

Tassie Pride History Walk

Tassie supplies bags with a walking route and assignments that you can carry out without a guide. The company also offers a walking tour for participants who want to learn about Amsterdam’s LGBTQ+ history. You can order the ‘tassie’ via the company’s website and decide for yourself when you take the walk.

VR LHBTIQ+ Museum

AUAS Digital Design students have put together the first virtual reality museum about the lhbtiq+ community. The students started the project because they believe that there is little reliable and positive information for members of the community online. The museum – with personal stories, an exhibition of Pride Photo 2022 and a virtual Canal Parade – can be visited until 7 August.

Pride at the Beach

This year, Pride is not limited to Amsterdam, Zandvoort is also participating. This is where the Pride at the Beach event will take place this weekend. In Zandvoort there is also a parade and parties, cultural activities and a walk on the beach are organized. Pride at the Beach lasts three days: from Friday, July 29 to Sunday, July 31.

Canal Pride

By far the most famous part of Pride Amsterdam is the boat parade, for which Amsterdammers and people from far beyond try to get a spot on the Prinsengracht. Dozens of boats representing all layers of the LGBTQ+ community pass by. The parade starts at the Oosterdok at 12:00 noon and ends at the Westerdok around 6:00 pm.

Closing Party

Pride Amsterdam is traditionally closed with a festive Sunday after the Canal Parade. There is a stage on Dam Square on which various artists perform. The program has not yet been announced.
