Pride Event in Tbilisi Canceled After Right-Wing Extremists Attack: Georgia’s Stigma Towards Homosexuality

A pride event in the Georgian capital Tbilisi was canceled on Saturday after thousands of right-wing extremists stormed the festival grounds where it was to be held.

Saturday’s open-air event had to be canceled when the homophobic mob smashed the stage, burned rainbow flags and looted the bar, according to Mariam Kvaratskhelia, who is one of the organizers. She said the police did nothing to stop them.

Homosexuality remains strongly stigmatized in Georgia, where the powerful Orthodox Church is in conflict with more Western-oriented parties over social issues.

The organizers of pride week in Tbilisi accuse the government of having collaborated with the violent anti-LGBT groups.

But the government claims that the right-wing extremists managed to trick themselves past the police, and that the authorities had evacuated the organizers
