Finding a camp for a child in Latvia is a huge problem. Neither masks nor tests, nor higher participation fees, nor even unpredictable changes in the rules can deter parents who are tired of distance learning all year round. Free places in the camps are cut like hot pies – in which camp the staff is fully staffed in just 20 minutes.
Every year, about 1,500 different children’s active recreation camps are registered in Latvia. Last year, during the short silence of Covid-19, a 1521 holiday camp was organized. This year, one third less – 1075, according to the data of the State Education Content Center (VISC).
“Delfi Bizness” explains how children’s camps work in the summer of 2021:
– how the camps manage to combine summer recreation with “covid” restrictions;
– what is the support of the state and local governments, for example, co-financing;
– how demand and supply change during a pandemic;
– what happens to the costs of organizing the camps and the participation fee.
