Price cuts on key consumer products have begun on supermarket shelves in a bid to tackle the austerity plaguing households.
The price reduction initiative concerns an invitation by the political leadership of the Ministry of Development and Investments, Mr. Takis Theodorikakos, to all suppliers of food and branded consumer products as well as organized retail (supermarkets) of the country.
Yes, the Ministry of Development released the first 123 codes, which take part in the price reduction, from 6% to 15%.
Both suppliers and organized retail are responding positively to the minister’s invitation and by the end of October approximately one hundred and twenty (120) product codes will be available on the shelves of supermarkets, as a start of the initiative, with the new reduced prices.
Theodorikakos: It will bring results
Regarding the issue of prices, Mr. Theodorikakos emphasized, speaking today to SKAI, that we will never stop the effort to increase the disposable income of citizens.
“Obviously in the summer there were products whose prices decreased, but there were also products whose prices increased because demand increased, such as fish for example.”
And he continued: “We have a triptych that we are fighting. Firstly, we ask the businessmen to be responsible and what they are doing with the 120 products is good, then secondly the State which carries out checks and finally we the Citizens who must buy from where it is convenient for us”.
“This combination will bring other results. If we want to move forward, we must produce better and more and give opportunities to the new generations”, concluded the Minister of Development.
Consultations
Much consultation has taken place between retail chains, suppliers and industry, with the aim of exhausting the possibilities for more permanent reductions in so-called fast-moving product codes. This was also the framework set by the competent Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos.
The price reductions will gradually pass from tomorrow on the store shelves and have as a point of reference the prices as they were formed until yesterday. Over the next period, the list of price reductions will be updated with the aim of including a total of 600 codes with basic consumer products in the next two months and by the end of 2024.
