(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Yu Han-joo = A painting that was almost thrown away as trash in a French home was discovered to be a 13th century masterpiece worth 24 million euros (about 33.4 billion won) and will be displayed at the Louvre Museum in the UK. Daily The Times reported on the 7th (local time).

According to reports, ‘Christ Mocked’, which is believed to have been completed in 1280 by Renaissance Italian painter Giovanni Cimabue (1240-1302), was in danger of being discarded in an ordinary home four years ago.

A woman in her 90s, who discovered this painting while organizing her house, was planning on throwing it away, but then asked an auction house to evaluate it.

As a result of the appraisal, it was revealed that this painting was one of 15 works completed by Cimabue during his lifetime. Cimabue is considered a master who broke away from the existing Byzantine art and opened the door to Renaissance art.

A few months later, ‘Christ Mocked’ was auctioned off and sold to Chilean billionaire Álvaro Sai Bendeck and his wife for 24 million euros, but the French government designated the painting a national treasure the same year and banned its export abroad. .

In addition, it is said that the Louvre Museum was given 30 months to purchase this work.

The Louvre Museum only recently concluded a deal with the owner of the painting and plans to display the work starting in 2025, The Times reported.

Information such as how much the Louvre spent to purchase this work and who exactly it dealt with has not been disclosed.

Laurence des Cars, director of the Louvre, said the painting “will become a major landmark in art history” and that it was a “great pleasure” for the museum to own it.

Meanwhile, The Times added that the Louvre Museum has also begun raising money to purchase ‘Wild Strawberry Basket’, a work by Jean-Simeon Chardin (1699-1779), a master of 18th-century French still life painting.
