About the winery
Penfolds, one of Australia’s most famous wineries, was founded in 1844 by an English doctor, Christopher Rawson Penfolds. Initially, it mainly produced fortified wines (port or sherry style), but also some dry white and red wines. By 1900, the winery had built up a good reputation, especially for its great ageable red wines. From 1950, thanks to cellar master Max Schubert, the winery specialized in red wines made from Syrah. It was gradually taken over by various companies and is now owned by Treasury Wine Estates. It is located in the heart of the Adelaide Hills in southern Australia. This estate is now a flagship and ambassador for great Australian wines. It owes its reputation, among other things, to the consistent quality of all its wines, even those in the lower price segment, despite the size of its vineyards (around 700 hectares).
